HOW DO I GET TO ATHENS?

The Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta is the world's busiest airport and is only about a 90 mile drive to Athens.

An airport shuttle bus provides frequent service between the airport and hotels in Athens. Click here for the complete schedule. The shuttle is located in the Ground Transportation Center of the airport (Green Row Spaces #12-15).

This University web site provides complete driving directions. We have also provided some of the more common driving routes here:

MAPS

This University web site provides a number of maps, including an interactive campus map. Maps can be also found using Mapquest or Google Maps (use E. Green Street, Athens GA 30602 as your destination).
WHERE CAN I PARK ON CAMPUS?

The Davison Life Sciences Building has an ungated parking lot on the east side of the building. Parking is free in that lot after 4:30 p.m., but you risk being ticketed if you park there for any length of time before 4:30. There are 2 parking decks within easy walking distance of the building where visitors can park for a fee: the South Campus Parking Deck on South Lumpkin Street (near the Georgia Center Hotel) and the Carlton Street Parking Deck. These decks are marked S11 and S15 respectively on this map of parking areas on campus. The Davison Life Sciences Building is in zone S07 on that map.
WHERE DO I STAY IN ATHENS?

There are a number of hotels in Athens. The most convenient (within easy walking distance) to the Department is the Georgia Center Hotel located on the University campus. The department also regularly houses guests at the Holiday Inn, the Foundry Park Inn and the Hilton Garden Inn.
Visit Athens!
Athens, Georgia, is regularly ranked among the top college towns in the U.S. The national press has lots of wonderful things to say about Athens, including the New York Times and CNN. Both Money and Forbes have named Athens one of the "Best Places to Retire" in the U.S. and Kiplinger's profiled Athens as being one of "Seven Cool Cities."

Athens is known as a showcase for live music. Check out a show at the 40 Watt Club or the Georgia Theatre.

Don't miss dinner at Five and Ten, where Chef Hugh Acheson was named one of Food and Wine's Best New Chefs of 2002. For filling vegetarian cuisine, try a Golden Bowl at an Athens landmark, The Grit. Weaver D's and Last Resort Grill are different, but delicious, takes on Southern food. For a pint, many geneticists head downtown to The Globe.

If you're looking for a quiet place to walk, try the trails of the State Botanical Garden, the Sandy Creek Park or the North Oconee River Greenway. Of course, the Appalachian Trail begins in Georgia, at Springer Mountain; 8 miles north of Amicalola Falls and 100 miles north of Athens.

For more information, see the Athens Convention and Visitor's Bureau. The Flagpole is a valuable guide to weekly happenings.
