Startup Companies Using Technologies from the Meagher Laboratory

Applied PhytoGenetics

(APGEN) in Athens, GA

Abeome, Inc. in Athens, GA

PhyGen (PhyGenus), Korea (comming soon)

BUSINESS:

-Applied PhytoGenetics, Inc. is a startup company devoted to the development and application of a novel new technology, called phytoremediation.

-Phytoremediation is using plants to clean polluted soil and water (i.e., break down organics, detoxify and sequester heavy metals).

TECHNOLOGIES:

Patented technology from the Meagher laboratory for both engineered ionic mercury and methylmercury detoxification and remediation with broad coverage.

Knowledge about native plant degrading enzyme activities toward toxic organics.

Extensive data on treatability studies, and field test for plants on contaminated soils and water.

New technology on dozens of genes from the Meagher laboratory can now be applied to mercury and arsenic remediation.

An extensive plant list with known activities

Immunological assays for more than a dozen enzymes involved in phytoremediation.

TECHNOLOGIES:

DISH (Direct Selection of Hybridomas) is the platform technology developed by Richard Meagher, Ph.D. in response to the biomedical community's need for antibodies to thousands of newly discovered or predicted proteins.

DISH is licensed to Abeome from the University of Georgia's Research Foundation.

DISH allows the rapid production of more and better monoclonal antiibodies for: (i) protein target validation in research; (ii) as diagnostics; (iii) and as therapeutics.

DISH is literally the Direct Selection of Hybridomas as single by fluorescent activated cell sorting. Abeome's patented myeloma parent generates the simultaneous high-level surface expression of the membrane isovariant of the secreted antibody produced by a hybridoma.
