ARP-containing chromatin remodeling complexes potentiate global gene silencing and activation

Top: Approximately 160 base pair units of DNA (blue) are wound tightly around core histones to make up each nucleosome (orange wrapped in blue). The six nucleosomes shown here are tightly spaced and hence inactive to transcriptional initiation.

ARP containing Remodeling complexes can mediate the transition between closed inactive (silent) nucleosome structures (top) and open active nucleosome structures (middle) allowing DNA dependent RNA polymerase and/or transcription factors to bind to the newly exposed DNA strands (bottom) between widely spaced nucleosomes.
