Actin act7 mutants have oblique cell division planes between root cells (left) that leads to disorganized cell files (right) and root twisting. Mutant plants with are at a strong selective disadvantage relative to wild type.

Phase contrast images of Arabidopsis root cells reveals oblique division planes between cells in root files of act7-4 plants, but perpendicular division planes between wild type root cells.

DAPI stained DNA in Arabidopsis root nuclei reveals that act7-4 root cell files are poorly organized relative to wild type.
