The act2-1 actin mutant contains a T-DNA insertion that disrupts the first intron splice acceptor site. Mutant plants have subtile root phenotypes, but are under strong negative selection, when grown in competition with wild type plants.

act2-1 mutants have a short or bulbous root hair phenotype relative to wild type

Homozygous (A2A2) and heterozygous (A1A2) act2-1 mutants have a reduced fitness in multigenerational studies relative to wild type (A1A1). Their viability is reduced to 0.7 and 0.87, respectively, of wild type plants, but fertility and meiotic capacity appears unaffected.
