Research Interests
The laboratory examines the molecular genetics and evolution of plant gene expression and environmental molecular biology. Actin and actin-binding proteins like profilin and cofilin are encoded by ancient gene families in plants. Recent experiments have shown that the diverse subfamilies of encoded protein isovariants have co-evolved specific protein-protein interactions in subsets of tissues and organs of Arabidopsis. Mechanisms for the phytoremediation of heavy metal pollution are being explored and plants which metabolize and accumulate arsenic and mercury aboveground have been engineered. We recently developed novel plant-based production and delivery systems for biopesticides to kill mosquito and fly larvae.
