The Department of Genetics at the University of Georgia will be holding a symposium to honor the Founders of the Department on October 7th, 2017.

Doctoral candidate and graduate research assistant in the department of genetics Brittany Jenkins has been awarded one of 39 Gilliam Fellowships by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute:

Building a world-class learning environment is a top priority for the University of Georgia.

That was the message delivered by UGA President Jere W. Morehead in his 2015 State of the University address Jan. 21 in the Chapel on North Campus.

Hannah Ericson, PhD candidate in Genetics, finished first place in the annual UGA Three-Minute Thesis Competition!

The exercise develops academic, presentation, and research communication skills and supports the development of students’ capacities to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience.

Can we understand how tapeworm stem cells regulate growth and regeneration by manipulating their genomes?

Pengpeng Bi, assistant professor in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences’ genetics department and Center for Molecular Medicine, has contributed to understanding the molecular mechanisms of muscle development and regeneration. His role in discovering, characterizing and naming the protein Myomixer was a substantial advance. Muscle growth and repair depend on the fusion of smaller muscle cells. Bi identified the protein Myomixer as a switch for human muscle cell fusion.

Margot Popecki is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Genetics in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences studying the evolution of light signaling in fireflies. Her major professors are John Wares and Kathrin Stranger-Hall.

Growing up, she was an avid reader and creative writer, so the Writing Intensive Program has given her the opportunity to unite her passion for writing, teaching and evolutionary biology.

Jessica Kissinger, Distinguished Research Professor in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences’ genetics department and former director of the UGA Institute of Bioinformatics, has focused her interdisciplinary career on the question of how parasites evolve. She has been a driving force behind the groundbreaking effort to create and maintain novel bioinformatics databases covering omics data for hundreds of dangerous pathogens.

Dr. Jill Anderson of UGA Genetics has received the Russell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the university’s highest early career teaching honor for outstanding and innovative instruction.
