graduate info
Admission is for the Fall semester starting in August. We must have all your application materials by January 2. Since admission is granted jointly by the Graduate School and the Department of Genetics, there are 2 parts to your application for admission. You must complete both parts.
Part 1. Application to the Graduate School
First, you must apply to the Graduate School. You can obtain all information at the Graduate School Admissions web site. You can apply online at this site by clicking here. The Graduate School will need a completed application form, payment of an application fee, official transcripts from any institution of higher education you have attended, and official GRE scores (the University of Georgia GRE code is 5813, no department code is required), and TOEFL/IELTS scores for applicants whose primary language is not English. We do not require any subject GRE. As part of your application, you will list the names of 3 recommenders in the fields on page three of the application along with their e-mail addresses. Each will receive a link to access a secure page where your recommendation can be submitted online. You should request letters from people who can speak to your academic accomplishments and your readiness to undertake graduate study.

International applicants require some additional information and forms available at the Graduate School web site.
Part 2. Application to the Department
You will also need to apply directly to the Department of Genetics. We require:
  • Application form
Fill out our Online Application Form OR download a copy of the application form.
  • Statement of Purpose
If you have not uploaded a PDF version via our online application page, mail us a Statement of Purpose. Your 1-2 page statement should include three parts: (1) a description of the educational experiences that have prepared you or contributed to your desire to pursue graduate study in genetics; (2) a detailed description of any scientific research in which you have participated; and (3) a description of your research plans and career goals; either a specific research plan, or the general area in which you hope to work. You should identify the individual faculty in whose lab you might be interested in working and be sure to include those names on the online application form.
  • Curriculum vitae
If you have not uploaded a PDF version via our online application page, mail us your curriculum vitae. Your CV should include any honors, awards, publications and any courses you have taken that are not listed on your transcript.

Scores and Grades
Although you must send official copies of your transcripts and GRE (and, if applicable, TOEFL/ IELTS) scores to the Graduate School, please also send photocopies of your GRE (TOEFL/ IELTS) and transcripts directly to the Department of Genetics.
